Below we explain exactly how we clean a furnace flue and a fireplace flue. If you contract this work to an other company make sure they are not skipping any of these steps that is my best advice to you!

There are over 30,000 chimney fires every year causing unnecessary damage to homes across the US.  These could easily be prevented by regular basic cleaning and maintenance.

The NFPA recommends that chimneys are swept regularly to prevent the risk of chimney fires.  How regularly depends on the type of fuel being burnt as follows:

Fuel burnt                     Frequency

Smokeless fuel             Once a year
Coal                             Twice a year
Wood Burning               Quarterly
Gas                              Once a year
Oil fired                       Once a year

It is a common thought that when you have your furnace serviced that they clean your chimney. The fact of the matter is that this is just not true at all.
If you do not see the technician showing up with long rods and brushes they are not sweeping your chimney flue they may clean your furnace but not the flue that vents these toxic gases out of your house.
When years go by with out cleaning your furnace flue especialy if your house is heated with oil. Then what happens is the build up of soot is actually acidic and eats the liner away from the inside out. If this neglect continues you will need a stainless steel liner installed eventually which is expensive, or worse a complete rebuild of your chimney. I suggest everyone go to there local hardware store and purchase a few carbon monoxide detectors. Place one in your basement near your chimney and follow the chimney up through your house. Place a carbon monoxide detector on each floor near your chimney. If one of these lifesavers go off leave your house and call us immediately as you can die from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Chimney Cleaning Furnace Flue Cleaning Process

The first thing we do is check to make sure your chimney is in decent shape. The we go to your furnace. We shut off your furnace then remove the exhaust pipe that enters your chimney.

Then we either block off the hole or work from the basement up it realy depends on the situation. Regrdless if we work down or up we use the same method. It is called the rod and brush method this method has been around for centurys and well it just plain works.

We take fiberglass rods that are between 3 to 6 ft in length attach the proper sized brush head to the first one put it up or down your chimney flue and move it up and down. This chimney sweeping process agitates the built up soot inside your chimney and the heavy stuff falls down while most of the dusty soot flows up into the air out the top of your chimney. We attach one rod at a time untill we hit the bottom or the brush head peaks out the top of your chimney.

We then remove the rods one at a time, Clean up any mess in your basement or roof, put the exhaust pipe back into the chimney. Place a clean bead of furnace cement around the exhaust pipe where it meets the masonry part of the chimney and we are done. This process can take anywhere from an hour to several hours depending on how dirty your furnace flue is.

Fireplace Cleaning Process

Cleaning your fireplace is a little different from cleaning your furnace flue again we can go from the fireplace up or the roof down it depends on the situation which way the sweep chooses to go. First thing is the set up we open your fireplace damper. All items on your smoke shelf are removed, Then we take drop cloths made of heavy canvas and drape them over the top of your smoke shelf we hold them in place with weight like a few bricks stacked nicely. we also place a drop cloth in front of your fireplace.

If we are working from the fireplace up we bring in the rods and brushes a shop vac with hepa filters in it and start work if we are working from the roof down we only bring in the vaccume.

Working from the fireplace up is very dirty ever see Dick Van Dyke, Well that's what we look like when we are done cleaning your chimney with this method. We actually get into the fire place lay on our back and sweep the chimney using the rod and brush method. The heavy soot in this case falls on us. Then after the we sweep the flue the smoke shelf is cleaned with wire brushes. After this we vaccume up all the mess. Then we bring all the mess that is in your fire box.

Now we bring all of our equipment to the truck and we are done. This process can take anywhere from an hour to several hours depending on how much build up is in your chimney.
